What are Learning Disabilities?
Learning disabilities encompass a broad range of neurological problems that are distinct from retardation and emotional disturbances. A child with learning disabilities is likely to have difficulties with reading, writing, spelling and mathematics. More subtle and harder to pinpoint are problems in paying attention, following directions, remembering, organizing, managing time, dealing with sequences and correctly distinguishing letters and numbers, right from the left side. A child’s academic, emotional and social development is often adversely affected if these obstacles are not addressed.
Employing the Art Forms to Teach
BLS employs all of the art forms to teach students with learning disabilities. The curriculum is multi-sensory and arts-based, as well as experiential in nature. Art, ceramics, music, drama and dance are utilized to enhance the process of neural maturation, which is a necessity for academic success. These modalities are at the core of the school’s academic curriculum and help increase attention, build organizational skills and competencies, which lead to language enhancement and scholarly pursuits as well as a strong sense of self-worth.
Reading and language arts are an intensive part of each day’s work. Math, science, social studies, Academic Clubs and physical education complete the elementary school program. The junior high concentrates on study skills, English literature and writing as well as intensive remediation in reading and math. The humanities, the arts, science and physical education round out the curriculum.
Our high school follows the approved Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) curricula, but the classes are taught in the Lab School way. Our high school courses include English, history, varied mathematical and science classes, foreign language, health, music, technology, and of course, art and the performing arts. The ninth graders also have the opportunity to operate a school store which allows skills to be put into practice and has been helpful in preparing students for summer or after school jobs. Our internship program offers our students the opportunity to explore possible careers by establishing a partnership with local businesses.
