Community Service
It has been found that reaching out and giving to the larger community often proves to be a worthwhile and valuable experience. Through community service, individuals often grow, developing strengths and talents they never knew existed. Not only is this advantageous for one’s self esteem, but individuals find deeper meaning and a sense of belonging when working as a team to enhance the quality of life for others. Because of this, Lab School students are required to complete 100 community service hours by graduation. In order to assist students in obtaining hours, a variety of community opportunities are available throughout the school year. Some of these volunteer experiences are held during the school week, while others are held on the weekends.
During the 2006 – 2007 school year, Baltimore Lab students participated in a variety of community service activities including the following: tutoring young immigrant students from Somalia through the Refugee Youth Project, rehabilitating houses with Habitat for Humanity, preparing the grounds for planting at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, preparing and serving dinner for families staying at The Ronald McDonald House, serving lunch at Our Father’s Place, and collecting toys, food, and money for various drives.
These and many other opportunities will again be offered this 2007 – 2008 school year. We encourage student leadership and always appreciate student suggestions! For more information, please contact Lee Drinkwater, Community Service Coordinator, (410)261-5500, extension 1010.
