High School Program
The High School Program covers grades 9 through 12 and currently enrolls about 55 students ranging in ages from 14-19. All students participate in a core academic program which features course work in English, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students can then elect to take other courses based upon interest levels to round out their academic program. These elective courses include art, sculpture, drawing and painting, kinetic sculpture, graphics, drama, technology, keyboarding, photography, physical education, creative writing, electronic music, set design, contemporary issues, and school newspaper.
Additional experiences beyond the academic program are also made available to students. Students in ninth grade have the opportunity to participate in the development and daily operation of the school store. Here students gain practical knowledge of real world economic issues that businesses and consumers face. Eleventh grade students participate in an internship program with local companies and agencies. This experience gives students an opportunity to shape choices for future college and employment plans as well as a venue to develop successful work habits. Students in the twelfth grade participate in a college prep program which assists seniors in taking college entrance exams and in the selection and application process. Twelfth grade students also participate in a senior project which encourages positive interaction with local community members and involvement in community projects.
The school day is organized into eight class periods each of which last 45 minutes. While students have multiple teachers and are therefore exposed to a wide variety of teaching styles, teachers individualize their instruction to meet the needs of each learner. We accomplish this by engaging students in unique learning opportunities which consider different types of learning styles and which allow students to access content and skills through multiple forms of intelligence. Class sizes range from 3-9 students. This again allows for highly individualized levels of instruction to take place. Further individual needs are addressed with the offering of related services such as speech/language, occupational therapy, and psychological services.
Hands-on and real world activities are a vital component of the school program. Students take regular field trips to connect and apply their classroom learning to environments outside the schoolhouse. We also incorporate off-campus trips for the sole purpose of providing students with opportunities to expand their peer relationships and to grow socially.
Students in the high school also have the opportunity to participate in after school athletic teams and to compete against other neighboring schools. Sports teams include cross-country, track and field, basketball, and swimming.
