We are dedicated to continuing Sally Smith’s vision. Our goal is to provide age-appropriate curriculum in a safe, nurturing environment. Each student has a class schedule that meets his/her jurisdictional requirements, needs, and interests. In addition to English, Math, Science, and Social Studies courses, our students may take courses in Spanish, Latin, Assistive Technology, Creative Writing, Yearbook/Newspaper, Small Business Management, or Rhetoric. Our Art Department offers an unparalleled variety of electives, including Stagecraft, Set Design, Digital Photography, Animation, Architectural Design, Radio Theater, Rehearsal & Performance, Shakespeare, Instrumental Band, and Chorus. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports, to join the Student Council, and to become Peer Mediators. The staff seeks to stimulate students and provide opportunities for them to experience success.

Our teachers understand students with learning disabilities and share a common goal – to develop both the academic and non-academic skills necessary for postsecondary success. Research, part of a longitudinal study conducted by the Frostig Center, identifies six critical “success attributes” related to students with learning disabilities. These are self-awareness, proactivity, perseverance, appropriate goal setting, effective use of social support systems, and emotional stability/emotional coping strategies. I encourage you to read the entire article, http://www.ldsuccess.org/research.html. Enhancing these “success attributes” is central to our curriculum. Trudy Fleisher, College Advisor, works with each senior to locate the most appropriate postsecondary placement. We care about our students and want them to become compassionate, productive, successful adults.
