Sally Seawright

Sally McKaig Seawright was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees as Interim Director of the Lab School of Washington and Baltimore Lab on December 6, 2007. Sally Seawright came out of her recent and happy retirement to lead the Lab Schools through this challenging and exciting period as the School searches for its next Director. "Sally Seawright is the perfect choice to lead the school through this transitional phase in our history as she is thoroughly versed in the methodologies and culture of the Lab School; is respected by parents, faculty and staff and is committed to ensuring the
highest quality education for children and adults with learning disabilities in a way that only Lab can deliver", said Robert Mathias, Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Sally Seawright was Coordinator (Head) of the Junior High Program at The Lab School of Washington for thirteen years from 1994 to 2007, where she worked closely with Sally Smith in developing and guiding the program for 7th and 8th grade students. Before her time at Lab School, Sally was Education Director of two schools that were part of the Foundation Schools of the Developmental School Foundation, serving students with emotional disabilities in DC and Prince Georges County. She also taught History and Social Studies at independent and public schools in DC and Prince Georges County. She is a graduate of Duke University, with an MA in History from the University of Maryland and a M ED in Special Education from American University.

A message from Sally Seawright

The unexpected passing of Sally Smith was a loss of immense proportion to the Lab School communities. Fortunately, though, our inspirational Founder, Director, Teacher, Mentor and Friend, left us with a clear vision of what must be done to preserve her legacy. Having been a student in Sally’s classes at American University and having served on The Lab School administrative team under her leadership, I feel a huge personal loss as do all my colleagues. Sally Smith was larger than life to all of us. Her creativity and energy knew no bounds. Her love of children and the arts became the foundation of the Lab Schools, and she showed us that all children can learn when they are taught in a creative, caring, experiential way.
No one can ever replace or take on all of the responsibilities that Sally Smith did so well. However, as Interim Director of The Lab Schools of Washington and Baltimore, I am committed to honoring the memory of our Founder/Director by continuing to translate her vision and dream of what education could and should be into reality. The entire staff is dedicated to continuing the successful methodology already established, to developing and expanding new programs that reflect the ideals and mission of the Lab Schools, and to providing the best education possible for Learning Disabled children and adults.
