Lab Today: News from Campus

Each year, Lab High School students in Mark Moverman's Physics class are required to build an apparatus made only of glue and toothpicks to protect an egg as it is dropped to the floor. Students first learn the relevant physics concepts such as the details of collisions, air resistance, pressure, center of mass and torque. Then the students experiment, design, innovate and build before finally testing their projects at the competition. Students are graded based upon their application of Physics and Engineering principles to the design and construction of the apparatus as well as a video presentation explaining their design.Three of the 13 projects succeeded in protecting an egg from a 7-meter fall to a hard floor.
The successful designs were built by seniors Ellie Martin, Mark Miller, and Cole Rice. The prize for the lightest of those projects was won by Mark who also set a new all-time record with his 12 gram structure. The previous record had been 14 grams and all projects must come in under 100 grams.

Pay it Forward: Consider a Gift to Lab!

One key component of the mission at Lab School is for Lab students learn to advocate for themselves as they become engaged and compassionate members of a global society.
As a Lab student you felt first-hand the commitment the teachers and support staff have for students here. During your tenure at Lab, donors, including alumni, gave to the Lab School Fund in order to support your education. Will you show the same commitment and gratitude to the current students at Lab by making a gift?
Gifts of all sizes make a difference! Thank you.
