Mark Moverman's High School Chemistry students took a trip back in time on Friday when Noel Bicknell welcomed them to The Lab School blacksmith shop next to the playground. The trip served as the culmination of a unit on metals. Of particular focus was the way steel is heat-treated in various ways to control the amount of carbon embedded within the crystalline structure. The students also learned how changes in the steel’s color and magnetic properties can be used to determine the temperature of the metal. Of course, they also had an opportunity to swing the hammer!
