Junior High News - 1/12/20

We hope that everyone had a wonderful, relaxing and joyous holiday.  As we return from the holidays, most make New Years Resolutions and some set goals for themselves for the year.  As a Junior High CREW Team, we wanted to reboot, restart, refresh.

We took some time to reflect on where we are as groups and how we would rate ourselves: doing well, not well, inconsistent, can make improvements, but then also reflect on what was the cause and how can a shift be made to improve and bond more.  While doing this, we were also reminded about the qualities that make up a CREW team as well as the Lab School pillars.  Do we find ourselves incorporating the following in our daily living (CREW, classroom, school, home, neighborhood, etc.);
Integrity, Kindness, Responsibility, Perseverance, Respect, Confidence, Self-Awareness, Empathy, Courage, Flexibility, and Honesty.

As we begin this new year/decade, lets take it a step further by looking at ourselves, our families, our jobs and our communities, and like our CREW Teams reboot, restart and refresh. We challenge you to think about these qualities and reflect on how you have used, will use or dive deeper to make them an intricate part of daily living.

How AMAZING are our 8th graders. The weeks before Winter break were filled with tension and intrigue in Ms. Krieck's Democracy class as the eighth graders participated in a mock trial of the Boston Massacre. Students studied assigned colonial characters and perspectives, analyzing the events leading up to and during the March 5 "Massacre" and preparing for their role in the trial. The entire eighth grade, complete with student attorney teams who independently subpoenaed student witnesses, conducted the trial professionally and with lots of dramatic flair. The dedication and hard work each student displayed showed their understanding of the roles they were assigned. The prosecuting and defense attorneys were phenomenal in every detail spoken. The defendants, each witness and the jury played their parts with such esteem.  In the end, the student jury was unable to agree and the defendants - nine proud "British soldiers" - were spared their gristly punishment. Luckily, we've hit the fast forward button to after the way, we're all friends again, and we're moving on to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution - a new country for a new year!  The Golden Globes should have been here to give out awards.
